Activity TitleDifferentiating Neurotoxins in Aesthetic Medicine: An International Consensus Conference
OverviewBotulinum toxin type A (BoNTA) injection is the most common nonsurgical aesthetic procedure performed in the United States, and thus an important tool in the armamentaria of aesthetic plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists. Since 2001, there has been only one BoNTA product approved in the United States for cosmetic application—Botox®Cosmetic.Regulatory approval was recently received for a second BoNTA formulation (abobotulinumtoxinA; Dysport®), and others are in clinical development. Each product is unique, produced using different manufacturing processes that may explain the differences in dosing and clinical results that have been observed. For these reasons, in order to optimize outcomes, physicians who use these products must become familiar with their similarities and differences and how best to use each of them.
To this end, on February 7 and 8, 2009, a group of experts in the aesthetic use of BoNTA from around the world came together to develop consensus statements on the use of the second formulation of BoNTA approved in the United States—Dysport®.The goals of this meeting were to discuss the latest information regarding the knowledge and gaps in BoNTA neurotoxin science (ie, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, etc); review and summarize the available clinical data on the new BoNTA formulation; share personal experiences with the use of BoNTA in clinical practice; and develop consensus on the optimal use of BoNTA for facial aesthetics for physicians with little to no experience with the new product. FormatThis activity presents the highlights of the meeting in the form of a video roundtable discussion with some of the consensus attendees, in which they review top-line findings and discussion points from the consensus meeting.
